According to the government, the "Whitehorse resident was linked to a previous case and was unvaccinated."
A person in the territory has died from COIVD-19. Yukon’s Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott confirmed the death in a press release last night.
According to the release, “The Whitehorse resident was linked to a previous case and was unvaccinated.”
This is the third death in the territory since the pandemic began.
This comes after an outbreak was declared in Whitehorse on Sunday. The city is dealing with the highest case count in weeks. As of yesterday, there were 21 active infections in the Yukon.
We now know that of the five announced yesterday, one is a student at Elijah Smith Elementary School. Parents are being informed by Dr. Elliot and the Department of Education.
Two of the cases are out of territory residents who tested positive for COVID in Yukon.
Dr. Elliot says they don’t know the source of the infections, but they do know how it is spreading. They say the outbreak is linked to high school graduations and house parties. Several end of school year events have been put on pause until it is safe to reschedule.
Youth vaccine clinics started up at the beginning of this month. Dr. Elliot says that at the moment, there are not fully vaccinated young people in any significant numbers.
