Yukon University has chosen to withdraw from its role in the upcoming Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse.

In a media release, the university says that it made the mutual decision with the Whitehorse 2026 Arctic Winter Games Host Society. As a result, Yukon University has cancelled its food service contract, venue and space agreements for the polyclinic, Games Operations centre, mission offices, transportation hub, and the decision to no longer host badminton on campus.

According to the release, the decision was made following discussions about how any labour disruption would interrupt access to the entire campus. Earlier this year, Yukon University’s unionized employees voted for a strike mandate.

Speaking with CHON-FM via email, a spokesperson with Yukon University confirmed that the strike vote puts the union in a legal position for strike or job action as early as March 2, just one week before the Arctic Winter Games.

The release says that the Whitehorse 2026 Arctic Winter Games Host Society has had to activate contingency plans to move all planned services off-campus with less than 40 days to go.
