The Yukon RCMP is investigating an explosion on Bates Crescent in the Riverdale neighbourhood.
At about 5:30 am, the Whitehorse fire department was called over an explosion which brought down a building completely, and affected a few residential homes withing the area.
The explosion killed a yet to be identified resident in the neighbouring house, and left home owner Timothy Preston critically injured and hospitalized.
In a Chon FM interview with an individual (identity withheld) he said his grandparents were affected by the explosion and are receiving medical attention at the Whitehorse Clinic
An individual who also spoke with Chon Fm said the loud boom which shook her building approximately 500 metres away, woke her up from sleep as she thought her building was going to the ground.
While the cause of the explosion is being investigated, the City of Whitehorse is working closely with the Yukon Coroner and the RCMP to demystify the mysteries behind the explosion.
Residents surrounding the incident are asked to respect the privacy of those impacted by the tragic incident, and are welcome to contact the RCMP on 867-667-5555 with any information that might aid the smooth process of this investigation.
According to the City of Whitehorse Facebook post, there is no further risk to the public safety at this time however, Bates crescent will experience limited local traffic until further notice.
