The decision follows several community meetings where residents raised concerns about traffic, neighbourhood impact, and a lengthy rezoning process.

The Yukon government has shelved plans to build a new École Whitehorse Elementary School at the Takhini Educational Land Reserve, citing planning gaps that drove the original Liberal‑initiated project into cost overruns.

According to a media release, the decision follows several community meetings where residents raised concerns about traffic, neighbourhood impact, and a lengthy rezoning process. Starting early next year, the Department of Education will launch a fresh engagement effort, inviting parents, First Nations partners, neighbourhood groups, and the broader school community to weigh in on a range of possible sites.

“We are committed to a thoughtful, collaborative approach that reflects what Yukoners want and supports students for generations,” the minister said.
Details of the engagement schedule will be released in the coming weeks, and officials promise to keep the public informed as the search for a new location moves forward.
