Government survey open to Indigenous Yukoners until July 31
The Government of Yukon is trying to solve the mystery of why Yukon First Nations are not applying to work there.
The territory's largest employer has had a preferential hiring policy since 2020.
However, the ratio of employees self-identifying as Indigenous has not budged from 14 per cent since then. And among those, Yukon First Nations make up just 8 per cent.
The "Indigenous recruitment and retention survey" launched June 26 intends to "explore the barriers that Indigenous applicants and employees experience throughout the recruitment process and employee experience with the Yukon government," according to the government's website.
The survey does not explore cultural preferences as they relate to career choice, Yukon's public education system, or historical factors, but focuses on possible administrative barriers related application and retention.
Yukon’s Indigenous population is about 22.3 per cent, according to the 2021 Census.
Yukoners who identify as Indigenous can complete the survey online until July 31 by visiting yukon.ca/engagements.
