Yukon Energy is asking all customers to be mindful of their electricity use, especially during peak periods from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A sudden cold snap-on Monday pushed the Yukon grid to its limits, resulting in a short‑duration power outage in the Whistle Bend neighbourhood.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Yukon Energy is asking all customers to be mindful of their electricity use, especially during peak periods from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the post, “Extreme cold can strain our system, and we may need everyone’s help to keep the lights on.” Simple actions—like cutting back on hot‑water use, turning off unnecessary lights, unplugging standby devices, and delaying heavy‑load chores until off‑peak hours—can make a real difference.
The utility has also asked major mines to switch to self‑generation while the grid is under pressure, a measure that has helped balance the load in past cold snaps. Residents are encouraged to stay warm, stay safe, and check Yukon Energy’s outage map for updates.
