President of Yukon Energy Andrew Hall says installation of rental diesel units will be occurring shortly.
Yukon Energy (YE) is letting Yukoners know that more LNG and diesel will be used for fuel consumption this winter in comparison to the past.
In a public notice released today, Yukon Energy says six portable diesel units will be installed at the generation station in the city.
President of Yukon Energy Andrew Hall says YE has identified a gap in generation if Yukon loses it's biggest hydro unit, the Aishihik Hydro Plant.
According to Yukon Energy, the rental units will serve as temporary power sources to be able to provide reliable energy sources for Yukoners throughout the cold months.
The new Independent Power Production policy set out for early next year will allow the government to explore numerous renewable projects moving forward.
While Yukon Energy notes renewable projects are on the horizon, including enhancements to hydro facilities and potential construction of a wind farm, thermal energy is still a necessity to provide a reliable and cost-effective power source for its customers.
As of 2018, almost 94% of energy generated in the territory was from hydro.
