The Yukon Chamber of Commerce and business representatives recently attended a job fair in Edmonton to attract out-of-territory workers.
The Yukon Chamber of Commerce participated at their first ever Edmonton job fair last week to help attract seasonal and permanent workers to the Yukon.
Yukon Chamber of Commerce President Peter Turner says three other business representatives also partook in the job fair to help provide insight for interested applicants and to fill the open positions.
"We arranged to take a small delegation to Edmonton to the Jobs Canada job fair that was hosted last week. We had a booth there and we took down three other representatives in the business community and the four of us tried to promote the Yukon as a great place to work and with lots of job opportunities".
Turner says multiple communities such as Watson Lake, Dawson City and St. Elias are looking to fill open positions across a wide array of job portfolios.
"We took down about 40 listings, including everything from store and hotel staff to IT specialists. We also took down information that allowed people to build awareness of the YUWIN website, which a lot of employers use to list their job positions. We also brought back a number of resumes from attendees. It was great because the opening line for us was... our problem is that we have the lowest unemployment rate in Canada and we're trying to get people to come up here and work."
Turner says certain industries are providing incentives such as housing for perspective out-of-territory workers, particularly since vacancy rates in communities across the territory are at record lows.
"The ones that I'm aware of are mostly in the hospitality sector. For example, I believe some of the hotels in Dawson City help people to find accommodation or actually have employee accommodation."
