The art was unveiled in the Watson Lake Sign Post Forrest this morning
The sign post forest in Watson Lake has some new art.
This Morning, Youth for Dignity, a program for students at Watson Lake Secondary School, designed to address gender-based violence unveiled their mural to commemorate Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit People.
The mural is of an indigenous woman in a red dress. She is holding a flame that says dignity and respect. The back features the hand prints of the young people that made it and a pledge to raise awareness of those who have gone missing and to keep people safe.
It was created in 2018, but it’s unveiling was put on hold due to the pandemic.
Ann Maje Raider is the Executive Director of the Liard Aboriginal Women's Society, which runs Youth for dignity. She says for her, the cause is personal.
“It’s very painful and it must stop. It must come to an end, and the only way we can end this, is if we collectively we end the madness, we end the violence. Everybody is responsible for doing that.” Says Raider
The youth group walked to the sign post forest just before 11am to unveil the art.
