The Whitehorse city council will give approval to its “Food for Fines” program for the 2025 season.
At the Nov. 3 executive council meeting, Bylaw Services Manager Elizabeth Beecroft outlined the initiative, which allows drivers to offset parking tickets for expired meters or exceeding the two-hour limit by donating non-perishable food or cash between Nov. 22 and Dec. 6.
Donations must equal or exceed the ticket value, which ranges from $20 to $40. Last year two‑week program raised $12,000 for Whitehorse Food Bank, Kaushee’s Place, and the former Skookum Jim Friendship Centre, now operated by the Boys and Girls Club Yukon as “The Landing Pad.”
Councillor Lenore Morris asked whether the $12,000 cap would be exceeded after a recent fine increase, but Beecroft said the department recommends keeping the limit to avoid revenue loss.
The public can bring donations to City Hall until Dec. 10. Council will vote on the proposal at its Nov. 10 meeting.
