The elected leadership of several Wet'suwet'en (Wet-SOO'-wet-en) First Nations split over the Coastal Gaslink pipeline are calling for the immediate resignation of Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett.
Four elected Wet'suwet'en chiefs say they were excluded from the process by which the province, the federal government and the nation's hereditary leaders arrived at a proposed memorandum of understanding on Wet'suwet'en land rights and title.
Details of the memorandum are sparse, but an agreement was reached on February 29th. With apparently hereditary chiefs..not so much elected leadership.
And on April 29th, the federal and provincial governments indicated that Wet'suwet'en clans had completed their review and given their support to sign it.
The elected chiefs are calling on both levels of government to reject the current memorandum and begin the negotiation process again with full participation from elected leaders
