Other anniversary activities include mural painting and free skateboarding lessons
Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation (THFN) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of signing its land claims and self-government agreements with a weekend of special activities in Dawson City, including the official naming ceremony its new men’s shelter.
The Jëje Zho – or “Men’s House” – is a two-storey building on Second Avenue with cultural elements in the design inspired by fish-drying racks, canoes, salmon, and the ochre found on Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in traditional territory, according the THFN's website.
It has 8 living units, and up to 11 beds. The second floor is for supported living, while the first-floor acts as an emergency shelter.
Other celebration activities in Dawson include a screening of several historic short films documenting the journey to self-government at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre.
Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizen Tristan Henry will be giving free skateboarding workshops on Front Street.
And River Doucette will be leading a community painting of two large-scale murals to mark the 25th anniversary.
