The Governments of Canada and Yukon will be joint-funding over 16 million dollars for three separate infrastructure projects in the Territory.
The Hounourable Member of Parliament Larry Bagnel, the Honourable Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Francois-Philippe Champagne, and the Honourable Yukon Minister of Community Services John Streicker made an announcement this morning regarding investments to three separate infrastructure projects across the Territory.
In total, over 12 million dollars will be provided by the Government of Canada through the Small Communities Fund, with the Government of Yukon covering remaining costs for the projects.
Community funding by the Yukon Government includes 100,000 dollars for a Na-Cho Nyak Dun Water Treatment Plant control upgrade, 125,000 dollars for the Tr'ondek Hwech'in Moosehide Village Solar System, and just over 3.9 million dollars for phase two of the Dawson Water and Wastewater upgrade project.
Bagnell highlighted the focus in renewable infrastructure investment moving forward with government.
"(We) need to find ways to cleaner economies that relies on green, renewable, and adaptive technologies that opens up newer opportunities for us to do business, to learn, and to innovate."
Streicker also commented on the specific investments made via the Small Communities Fund at the meeting.
"We're addressing core infrastructure priorities of roads, clean drinking water, green energy, and environmentally-responsible solid waste and wastewater management at the territorial and local levels."
Closing remarks included the Territory's commitment to reducing reliance on small communities needs for diesel fuel by building more renewable energy projects such as solar.
