The list of postponed events continues to get longer.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brendan Hanley has announced nine new cases of COVID-19. Eight are in Whitehorse and one is in a rural community. All are isolating and recovering at home.
There are now 54 active cases in the Yukon including one probable and two out of territory cases. 11 are of the Gama variant.
In response to the outbreak, the Vuntut Gwitchin Government is implementing mandatory safety measures. A curfew is now in effect from 10pm to 5am within Old Crow. Non-essential travel to the community is also strictly prohibited right now. Only those authorized by the Vuntut Gwitchin Government can enter. Citizens can only gather within an established 2 household bubble.
There are also self isolation requirements in place for those who have traveled out of the community, were in contact with someone infected, are living with someone awaiting test results, or those who have socialized out of their bubble. Those who don’t follow orders could face fines.
Carcross/Tagish First Nation is also asking that anyone thinking of a visit to the traditional territory to consider waiting until the outbreak subsides.
Several events around the territory have been postponed. One of the latest the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation general assembly. It was originally scheduled for next week. There’s no word on when it will be rescheduled for.
Premier Sandy Silver says that going forward, enforcement of public safety measures will be increased.
