A new solar energy project has been completed by the Da Daghay Development Corporation.
A new solar energy project has been finished by the Da Daghay Development Corporation. 198 solar panels were installed along the roof at the River Bend condo complex in the Whistle Bend subdivision in Whitehorse. In total, 61.4 kilowatts of energy will be created and will likely power the majority of the complex.
Andie Dimen, executive assistant of the Da Daghay Development Corporation, mentioned the importance of the project.
She stated, "The whole idea with affordable housing is to make it as energy efficient and cost efficient as possible. We're trying to do something innovative that benefits the community...Yukoners...and all Ta’an Kwäch’än Council citizens. We thought that was the right direction to go in."
The Ta’an Kwäch’än Council is the sole shareholder of the company.
If more energy is produced than needed, the surplus of energy created will be sold to the Yukon's Micro-Generation Program.
The Yukon Micro-Generation Program in the Territory is meant to allow customers or residents of Yukon to offset their electrical consumption by establishing renewable energy technologies in their homes or business.
Dimen also mentioned future plans regarding building solar energy units. She said "We're going to start looking at building another two units, that is potentially continuing the same project that we just completed on those two units as well. Any other locations in the future we're gonna be developing, that is something we'll look at. It's such a good (energy) source."
The Da Daghay Development Corporation was incorporated in 1989. The Ta’an Kwäch’än traditional territory and ancestral lands stretch from the confluence of the Yukon and Teslin River south to White Bank Village at the confluence at the Takhini Rivers to Winter Crossing eastward near the Teslin River.
