Skookum Jim Friendship Centre Announces New Partnership With Yukon Government

The Integrated Supports for Yukon Youth facility will be closing next month.

The facility will resume all existing roles of the Integrated Supports for Yukon Youth following the offices closure next month.

The Skookum Jim Friendship Centre will be taking over all roles of the Integrated Supports for Yukon Youth  following the offices closure next month.

The announcement came from the Yukon Government and the centre yesterday, and Skookum Jim Friendship Centre Executive Director Tammy McKeown says two more positions will be added as the services transfer over.

"Skookum Jim is responsible for hiring two youth support workers in the transition. They're going to be training for three weeks at the office an then coming over here. We're hoping there's not going to be a lag in service for the clients ultimately."

McKeown says it's possible the transfer will be part of a greater youth services program moving forward, however there's still uncertainty regarding employment with Integrated Supports for Yukon Youth workers as the office closes.

McKeown says the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre will make a good collaboration with the Yukon Government.

"I actually think it's a benefit to the organization in the sense that we actually offer a lot of youth services here at the organization.  We may find that the collaboration benefits us in a certain way as well."

The Friendship Centre is the oldest First Nation organization in Yukon, and helped with the development of First Nation land claims, the Council of Yukon First Nations and other groups in the Territory.
