Report: Whitehorse Best Place in Canada for Entrepreneurship in 2018

Canadian Federation of Independent Business has named Whitehorse as the top place in Canada for entrepreneurship in 2018.

Whitehorse was named the top place in Canada for entrepreneurship in 2018 according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). 

The report, now in it's tenth year, compares 125 Canadian cities and takes into account factors like demographics, earning levels, optimism, growth plans and local tax policy into its rankings.

Other communities cracking the top ten include  Victoriaville, Quebec in third place, Collingwood, Ontario in sixth place, and Squamish, British Columbia in tenth place.

CFIB vice-president Ted Mallet says small business "are the backbone of the Canadian economy, bringing jobs, new products and a sense of identity to their communities... (we) congratulate the cities that have landed on the top of our list this year by embracing entrepreneurial values and understanding the needs of small business owners."

Mallet says higher competition and costs tend to bring down other larger metropolitan areas on the list, including Kelowna, BC in 16th place, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 35th place and Edmonton, Alberta in 43rd place.

Mallet says other factors taken into the report include commercial and residential taxes and how they're distributed between residents.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is Canada's largest association of small and medium-sized business across Canada with over 110,000 members.
