$170,000 has been raised for the new shelter so far.
A new women's shelter is one step closer to reality in Hay River after Kristine Vannebo-Suwala, the executive director of the Hay River Family Centre, secured $170,000 for the new facility.
The old women's shelter was demolished on Saturday, and was running at full capacity for years.
The former building is also meant to provide a sanctuary for youth escaping domestic violence and will provide a bigger housing unit and amenities for its users.
Suwala is also hoping the new facility will have eight rooms and space for programming, bigger than the previous building which only had five rooms.
Suwala is also hoping the new shelter will open sometime in 2020, but the facility still need millions of dollars in funding.
The Town of Hay River has opened a temporary home for shelter in the town in the meantime.
