The announcement came from Minister Dominic LeBlanc today.
The Federal Government is proposing changes to acts that will help protect the rights and interest of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
These include amendment to the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act in the Northwest Territories, which would aim to repeal and restructure water and land resources to better reflect the interests of Indigenous governments in the region.
Provisions that would better provide more environmental assessments and regulation for resource protection, and help establish more equal governmental representation from Indigenous governments and organizations in the area.
Other changes include amendments to the Canada Petroleum Resources Act, which will help provide co-management for petroleum resources in the Arctic.
