The contest explores Kaska culture, history and land.
The Yukon Mint Corporation is now accepting submissions for the second "My Kaska Nation" gold design contest.
The contest gives artists the chance to explore Kaska culture, history, and land by letting contestants present a design submission of their own Kaska First Nations art.
The winning design gets put onto a gold coin where it then gets minted into a variety of sizes.
The president of the Yukon Mint Corporation Janet Lee-Sheriff discussed with our own Peter Novak this morning regarding who can enter the contest and what a winning design looks like.
"The contest is open to all Kaska citizens regardless of residency...we ran the contest last year, and the winner was Miranda Lane and she had a moose as the design. She explained the significance of the moose to people and to the whole community. We also made sure the the coin had the Dene word for moose so we would uphold the language."
Miranda Lane is a self-taught artist inspired by the natural environment and she is a member of the Liard First Nation.
