LePage Park Undergoing Renovations Next Month

LePage Park in downtown Whitehorse is set to undergo significant resurfacing renovations next month.

Yukon Historical Museums Associations (YHMA)  Executive Director Lianne Maitland says LePage Park in downtown Whitehorse will be undergoing a significant renovation project starting next month.

While $91,000 is being provided by Lotteries Yukon in the project to help install new rubber surfacing along the park's stage, Maitland says another $15,000 is aimed to be  raised through donations to help cover remaining project costs. 

Maitland says the new surface installation will have more benefits in comparison to the old wooden deck and concrete surfaces.

"Usability around the stage area is one added benefit since many people like to dance. They also like to sit there when there's overflow from the seating area. This is a much more comfortable surface since it's cushy from the rubber. It also allows the park to be more accessible since the material can be contoured so the surface flows nicely. Right now, there are some height changes. It can make it difficult if you're rollerblading, in a wheelchair, or just have mobility issues."

Maitland says this project will be the first of a bigger resurfacing project coming to the park.

"We hope to replace all of the current surfacing.  We're just doing the main areas right now, including around the stage and between the yellow and blue houses. There is a back lawn area and a boardwalk that runs from the sidewalks to the houses at the back of the property. We will eventually be resurfacing those as well."

Planting more weather-resistant plants and doing more landscaping are other long-term goals for the park, Maitland notes. The project is expected to be completed in late August.

YHMA is responsible for the maintenance of the public park through a 99-year lease agreement with the City of Whitehorse. For anyone interested in donating to help with the project, you can search for the "Yukon Historical & Museums Association" on  the Canada Helps website.
