David Loukidelis will examine segregation practices on inmates with mental health conditions.
Justice Minister Tracey McPhee has appointed David Loukidelis to inspect the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.
The inspection is expected to begin in January. The government is committing that Loukidelis will be independent of the government and will have full access to examine any thing or any record at the WCC, apart from inmate medical records, as he undertakes his inspection.
Loukidelis will also have authority to conduct interviews of WCC employees and seek input from First Nation governments, community members and other stakeholders to give further context to the issues or questions that arise from the inspection.
A final report is expected to be given to the government in March.
