
Used motor oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze, and antifreeze containers can now be recycled free of charge to the public.
A new recycling collection site for used motor oil and oil containers has opened in Whitehorse.
At a media event at the Waste Management Facility in Whitehorse, Interchange Recycling opened its first permanent collection site, bringing the Extended Producer Responsibility program outside of British Columbia for the first time.
The collection site will accept used motor oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze, and antifreeze containers. As part of the Extended Producer Responsibility program, recycling these materials is free to the public.
To clarify how the collection site works, Interchange Recycling Director of Operations Jenn Robson described the process to media and the public at the event.
“When a consumer or resident brings in their used oil or their antifreeze for recycling, it will be handed off to one of the site operators here, so that it’s managed responsibly and not put into the wrong container,” said Robson.
“Once the containers are full, the material is bulked and prepared for shipment… There are several different certified processors that both KBL and [Interchange Recycling] will be working with. They’re all located in Alberta, currently… and that’s where all of the material will end up.”
Used motor oil will be refined and repurposed, used antifreeze will be cleaned and have additives returned so it can be used again, and the containers will be pelletized and sold to be made into new materials.
Collection events are also scheduled in three communities outside of Whitehorse: Teslin on August 5, Watson Lake on September 13, and Faro on September 20.
