A healing heart garden is now located outside the Whitehorse RCMP detachment on 4th Avenue. The garden aims to symbolize a commitment to strengthen relations between the RCMP and First Nation Communities around Whitehorse.
A healing heart garden was presented today by the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, the Ta’än Kwäch’än Council and the Whitehorse RCMP in front of the territorial capital's detachment.
The garden symbolizes a commitment to strengthen relationships between the RCMP and First Nation communities in Whitehorse.
Minister of Justice Tracy-Anne McPhee says the garden will serve as a reminder for all Yukoners working towards reconciliation.
"We will lose our way on occasion and perhaps we will be walking by this garden and it will remind us of our commitments to reconciliation, to each other as people and to our community as a whole."
Kwanlin Dun First Nation Councillor Jessie Dawson says the garden is the symbol and start of a working relationship between First Nations and the RCMP.
"I felt really good seeing it (the garden). This is something that you wouldn't see in the past with the history of First Nations and the RCMP. You wouldn't even of seen it 10 or 20 years ago. This is a start and it's a great start. We can do better and this is the start of a working relationship."
A wolf and crow were also put up in the garden to symbolize the prominent clan systems evident in the Yukon.
