Government of Yukon Will Retender Carmacks Arena Construction

The Government of Yukon has started legal action, filing a Statement of Claim against the contractor and the bonding company. The Government of Yukon remains dedicated to the completion of this project. Work on the arena will continue during court action.

Construction of the new Carmacks arena will be retendered in March 2021. The Government of Yukon terminated the right of the original contractor to continue work on the project on December 15, 2020, due to performance issues and delays.

The Government of Yukon has started legal action, filing a Statement of Claim against the contractor and the bonding company.

The Statement of Claim was filed in Yukon Supreme Court. The Government of Yukon is claiming $10 million in damages against the contractor and $7.3 million under the performance bond for the project.

In October 2018, the Government of Yukon hired a contractor to construct the arena in Carmacks. The project was scheduled for completion in November 2020.

The original project cost was $16.55 million with the Government of Canada contributing $10.5 million to this project through the Canada’s Small Communities Fund and the Government of Yukon providing $6.05 million.

The new 2,500-square metre facility includes an indoor arena, community spaces and a link to the existing recreation centre.
