Goeppel pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting voters to register for proxy voting which contravenes the election acts section 106, which has since been repealed.
Elections Act Trial Concluded
Tamara Goeppel pleaded guilty to one charge of aiding and abetting voters in the 2016 territorial election.
In an agreed statement of facts it was noted that with genuine intent to assist marginalized citizens for voting through proxy, Tamara Goeppel broke section 106 of the elections act.
Goeppel, 2 weeks before the election approached voters and had them fill out an application, on which was a box to check if the applicant presumed they would be out of the territory on the day of the election.
Section 106 was agreed upon to be inconsistent, and has since been repealed.
However, despite the intent and the confusion, the regulatory sentence for the distinguished public servant is a one-thousand dollar fine, plus territorial surcharges, which she has 2 months to pay.
Goeppel's Lawyer, Richard Fowler says she did take some measures to ensure she was complying with the act and in comments after the trial mentioned that by pleaded guilty to the one charge saved witnesses from having to attend court.
The crown extended thanks to witnesses and the citizen who brought up the initial concern and withdrew the other two charges.
