The announcement of the resignation came via an open letter to the prime minister today. Philpott says she will keep serving as MP for Markham-Stouffville in Ontario in the meantime.
Former Minister of Indigenous Services Jane Philpott has resigned from Trudeau's Cabinet.
Philpott was Minister of Indigenous Services from 2017 to early 2019 before being appointed as Minister of Digital Government, and Philpott says the issues around the SNS-Lavalin affair raised serious issues for her leading up to her resignation.
In a written statement to the prime minister, she says an “attorney general should not be subjected to political pressure or interference regarding the exercise of her prosecutorial discretion in criminal case... I have lost confidence in how the government has dealt with this.”
Philpott says she will keep serving as an MP for Markham-Stouffville in Ontario and this comes as Canada's former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybouldt resigned from cabinet less than a month ago.
