He is now on leave from his job as Chief Medical Officer of Health.
Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brendan Hanley says he wants Larry Bagnell’s old job. Yesterday afternoon outside of the Yukon Arts Centre, Dr. Hanley announced that he will run as the Liberal candidate to be the territory’s next Member of Parliament.
“In many ways, I am still surprised myself, being in front of you today as the federal Liberal candidate,” says Hanley.
Bagnell announced last week that if a federal election is called, he won’t be running fore re-election.
Dr. Hanley says he would like to lead change when it comes to reconciliation, global warming, and mental health and addictions. He says he is new to politics, but he brings strong experience and public recognition.
“I feel grounded in the belief that, this is the right place to be. From a personal level, this is a good moment for me, and I’m excited at the prospect of a new challenge and serving Yukoners in a new capacity. I’ve learned a lot in my 23 years as a northern physician, and can bring a strong and experienced northern voice to the national table,” says Hanley.
Dr. Hanley is now on leave from his job as Chief Medical Officer of Health. Dr. Jesse Kancir will fill the CMOH role this week. Dr. Cathrine Elliot will return from a vacation next week and lead the territory’s public health, as Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health.
