The 17th annual Learning to Lead Hockey Camp is underway in Whitehorse this week at the Canada Games Centre.
The Learning to Lead Hockey Camp features elite level coaches, athletes, and other professionals who mentor and teach leadership and communication skills to the youth in attendance. While the event is called a hockey camp, the focus is more about learning leadership skills.
Ashley Callingbull of the Enoch Cree Nation is a model, actor and former Miss Universe 2015. She returns to the hockey camp for the third year as a motivational role model for the youth attending the hockey Camp.
Arron Asham played hockey in the NHL for 15 years. His job now is to come to communities and teach hockey. He says getting out, having fun, and working hard is important for the kids.
Grand Chief Peter Johnston is a hockey dad with two kids enrolled in this year’s hockey camp. His kids are aged 7 and 10 and this is his daughter’s sixth camp. He says the hockey camp is about mentorship and relationship building.
Hockey Camp events are scheduled this week until Friday July 26 at the Canada Games Centre.
