It's up to the government to work out the details now.
Watson Lake could be getting upgrades to some of their cross walks.
Yesterday, Watson Lake MLA Patti McLeod introduced a motion in the Legislative Assembly to add pedestrian-activated flashing lights to two cross walks on the Alaska Highway, which runs right through the community.
The motion passed unanimously.
One of the crosswalks is near Andrea’s Hotel and the other is where the old Hougens store was. McLeod says one of them currently has an over head cross walk sign but the lights are often out and it has “proven to be a challenge” to get the bulbs changed.
“Not everybody remembers to slow down when they’re going through the municipality. It’s a matter that’s been raised with me by constituents for some years, and I’ve heard many stories of close calls from pedestrians and drivers who are quite concerned.” Says McLeod.
McLeod says “As truck and other traffic increases – especially as pandemic restrictions are lifted” there is a need to improve pedestrian safety, and get traffic to slow down.
She says it's now up to the government to make the upgrades happen.
