Mi’kmaw Sport Council of Nova Scotia have appointed Kevin Sandy as Chief Executive Officer for the upcoming 2020 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax.
Mi’kmaw Sport Council of Nova Scotia have appointed Kevin Sandy as Chief Executive Officer for the upcoming 2020 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax.
His role will be to help plan the Indigenous games and to help develop a stronger Indigenous cultural program during the duration of the competition.
Commenting on the decision, Mr. Sandy says he's “tremendously excited and honoured to play a key role in planning the games which will be hosted in Mi’kmaw territory”.
Sandy is currently the Director of Business Operations at Iroquois Lacrosse in Ontario and he’s helped with the planning of the 2015 Pan Am Parapan Games, the 2017 North American Indigenous Games, and the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.
6000 people will compete in the games next year in Halifax and Indigenous athletes will participate in 15 sports over the eight days of competition.
The North American Indigenous Games is a multi-sport event involving Indigenous athletes from across Canada and the United States and the first Indigenous Games were held in 1990 in Edmonton, Alberta.
