Official Opposition House Leader Scott Kent is asking the government to look more into selling land to Yukon developers for building of residential lots in the city.
As house prices increase across Whitehorse, the Yukon Party is questioning why the current Liberal Government voted down a former Yukon Party amendment motion that would have prioritized Yukon developers in the potential sale of residential building lots.
Official Opposition House Leader Scott Kent spoke with CHON News regarding the decision.
"This motion was an opportunity for the government and indeed the entire Legislature to show support for local contractors. When they used their majority to vote it down, it was disappointing for us."
Kent also highlighted other areas of Whitehorse where local contractors are helping to build residential building lots.
"When you look at what the government is doing now with respect to Whistle Bend it's local contractors that doing the site work... moving the dirt, (and) paving the streets. I think there's capacity in the local market"
According to the Department of Community Services- Land Development branch, finished lots are handed over to the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources for lottery and over-the-counter sales.
