The funding will support a hot lunch pilot program, school kitchen improvements, and the development of territory-wide Healthy Food Guidelines.
The Government of Yukon is expanding access to healthy food in the territory's schools, thanks to a $1 billion investment from the Government of Canada over the next five years.
The funding will support a hot lunch pilot program, school kitchen improvements, and the development of territory-wide Healthy Food Guidelines. Seven Whitehorse and rural Yukon schools will participate in the pilot, which will help gather data and address logistical challenges before possibly expanding further.
According to a media release, the selected schools are: Tantalus Community School in Carmacks, Del Van Gorder School in Faro, Ghùch Tlâ Community School in Carcross, Johnson Elementary School in Watson Lake, Selkirk Elementary School in Whitehorse, Takhini Elementary School in Whitehorse, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary School in Whitehorse.
The funding will also support enhanced food programming in francophone schools and increase funding for the Yukon Food for Learning Association.
"Nutritious food is vital for learning and for healthy communities," said Minister of Education Scott Kent. "With the support of the Government of Canada, we are strengthening school food programs across the Yukon."
