Smallwood faces two counts of Criminal Code dangerous driving offences and two counts of Territorial Motor Vehicle Act charges.
Robert James Smallwood has been charged in connection with a fatal two-vehicle collision on the Alaska Highway at the intersection of Swan Haven Drive on August 2, 2024, that claimed the life of Yukon government deputy minister Michael Prochazka and injured Minister Nils Clarke.
In a media release, The RCMP said following the investigation, Smallwood faces two counts of Criminal Code dangerous driving offences and two counts of Territorial Motor Vehicle Act charges, including careless driving and driving at an unreasonable speed.
The collision occurred when a southbound vehicle struck another vehicle entering the highway. Minister Clarke suffered injuries requiring hospitalization, while deputy minister Prochazka tragically lost his life.
Smallwood is scheduled to make his first court appearance on June 25, 2025, in Whitehorse.
According to the release, the Whitehorse General Investigation Section and RCMP will not provide further information related to the investigation as the matter is now before the courts
