The Teslin Tlingit Council and the Yukon Government signed an intergovernmental agreement Friday in Teslin on developing its relationship, shared priorities and concerns and reconciliation.
The five-page agreement, signed by Naa Shaade Hani Richard Sidney, (Chief-Teslin Tlingit Council) and Premier Sandy Silver lists priorities such as subdivision development, forestry, education, health, fish and wildlife, economic development, infrastructure, tourism and land exchanges.
Sidney says this agreement lays the foundation for a better relationship. “This agreement is going to form the basis of a new relationship, both now and long into the future.” “This agreement will take us to the next level.”
Silver stated. “It [intergovernmental agreement] talks to me about maturity of the Teslin Tlingit Council. It talks to me about the sophistication of self-governance and the relationships that are being forged.” “This agreement, if it did one thing, allowed my team to know how important these issues are, and it allowed my team to know the priorities from this community from the perspective of Chief and Council.”
The agreement will not create or impact First Nations rights or obligations, but sets out both governments will work together on shared priorities and reconciliation.
