The National Screen Institute announced the four teams which will be part of IndigiDocs, including one Yukoner.
The documentary filmmakers have been selected for the National Screen Institute 2019 installment of IndigieDocs.
NSI IndigiDocs provides development and mentorship for up to four producer/director teams who then produce a short documentary.
Teams receive a cash award of up to $16,000 to put towards the production of a 10-minute documentary, and will be presenting their work at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto.
Yukoner, Chantelle Boya-Shaw was chosen to direct alongside producer Tyler Watts a doc with First Nations flavour. Their documentary will be called May the Bannock Force Be With You. It will explore the fried breads traditions and versatility, including pre-contact bannock.
The other team we spoke with consists of Jennifer Illes and Sharon Heigl who are wading through the multitudes of nomenclature, associated with First Nations people, over the years. In Who Are We? Jen and Sharon try to promote calling a person by their Nation's ancestry. For example, Cree, Mi'kmaq, or Tlingit.
These two teams that make up this intake took their first steps through a 4-week film boot-camp out of New Westminster put on through ACCESS, an aboriginal resource centre.
The filmmakers will travel to Winnipeg in February to commence their training.
