Indigenous leadership takes centre stage: Rebecca Chartrand and Mandy Gull-Masty appointed to key cabinet roles

The AFN Yukon Region emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between the federal government and Indigenous communities.

In a significant milestone for Indigenous representation, Prime Minister Mark Carney's newly appointed Cabinet features two prominent Indigenous leaders: Rebecca Chartrand as Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, and Mandy Gull-Masty as Minister of Indigenous Services.

Rebecca Chartrand's appointment is seen as a crucial step in addressing northern and Arctic priorities, while respecting Indigenous rights, knowledge, and governance. As Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs, Chartrand will play a key role in shaping policies that impact Indigenous communities in the region.

Mandy Gull-Masty's appointment as Minister of Indigenous Services is also a significant development, as she will oversee the implementation of policies and programs aimed at improving the lives of Indigenous peoples across Canada.

In a media release, the AFN Yukon Region emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between the federal government and Indigenous communities to ensure that defence and security strategies are developed and implemented in a manner that respects Indigenous rights and governance.

This milestone comes as former Kwanlin Dün chief Doris Bill, has announced her intention to run for the Yukon Liberal leadership. Bill's leadership bid is seen as an opportunity to further amplify Indigenous voices and perspectives within the party.
