The "Day of Mourning" is held every year on April 28th, to remember the lives of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while on the job and will be held online this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yukoners are invited to view the event live on the Yukon Federation of Labour's Facebook page. The Day of Mourning pays tribute to the lives of the workers lost to work-related incidents or occupational disease, and to those who have been injured on the job.
The event normally occurs each year at the Workers' Memorial in Shipyards Park. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in compliance with public safety orders from the Government of Yukon, the event will be held online this year. This will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and emphasizes the importance of workplace health and safety.
In 2019, 1187 workers were impacted by a workplace injury that required time away from their jobs to recover. In 2019, there were 3 workplace fatalities.
Ron Rousseau, President of the Yukon Federation of Labour said in a statement, "This year's Day of Mourning event reflects the message of prevention in the spirit of reducing risk and protecting lives in the workplace. On April 28, we remind ourselves of our commitment to workplace safety and respect the lives that have been lost. We can always do more to protect each other."
Everyone is welcome to view the live Day of Mourning ceremony that will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, on the Yukon Federation of Labour Facebook page.
