The event commemorated Red Dress Day, a nationwide initiative held annually on October 4th to raise awareness about the ongoing concerns surrounding violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people.

Over 100 people gathered in Whitehorse on October 3rd to participate in the SISTERS IN SPIRIT vigil walk, organized by the Yukon Aboriginal Women's Council.

The event commemorated Red Dress Day, a nationwide initiative held annually on October 4th to raise awareness about the ongoing concerns surrounding violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people.

The walk began at the Whitehorse RCMP Detachment office and proceeded through Main Street, culminating at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Center with a light meal and testimonies from MMIWG2S+ family members. According to Christina Genier, the master of ceremonies for the event, the walk aimed to provide an opportunity for the community to show support to families affected by MMIWG.

The vigil is part of a broader movement to address the systemic issues contributing to the disproportionate rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. The Yukon Aboriginal Women Council has been actively working to raise awareness and support for MMIWG2S+ families through various initiatives, including the Sisters in Spirit Walk and Vigil.
