YG Looking at Second Fibre Optic Link

Dempster Line could cost upwards of $95 million

With the Dempster Highway fibre optic line costs skyrocketing, the department of Economic Development is now looking at a second option.

Minister Ranj Pillia told the Legislature the cost of the line could be $75 million or higher, is facing geographical challenges, and other unfinished work including agreements with the Northwest Territories.

He says the government is examining the Juneau connection via Skagway.

Pillia says the government is awaiting federal funding approval, expected this summer, before completing detailed estimates before making a final decision.
