National Aboriginal Day Now a Stat Holiday in Yukon

Lawmakers voted Monday to create another holiday

National Aboriginal Day is now a statutory holiday in the Yukon. Lawmakers voted Monday to make June 21st a paid day off.

Community Services Minister John Streicker called the holiday a progressive step, which will allow all Yukoners to celebrate Indigenous peoples' history, culture and traditions.

The business community is divided on the holiday, with some expressing concern about business impact through lost revenues or increased hourly pay.

The City of Whitehorse echoed similar concerns, as Mayor Dan Curtis stated it will cost the City hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay employees.
