Bannock Slap Indigenous Soul Food is open for business at the Main Street Town Square in Whitehorse.
With the official opening of Whitehorse’s Main Street Town Square Friday afternoon also came the grand opening of an Indigenous owned and operated food truck. Christine Lewis is the owner of Bannock Slap: Indigenous Soul Food, and was surprised to find that she was the first Indigenous owner of a food truck in the Yukon.
"There is over forty-nine percent Indigenous people here in Whitehorse, Yukon," said Lewis, "and there isn't any Indigenous food truck that is here locally. I've been watching for the last seven years, ever since I took up culinary arts, and formed this dream. "
Bannock Slap Indigenous Soul Food serves bannock, stew, burgers, and Lewis’ signature dish, the Bannock Slap, which piles chili, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream on top of bannock. The truck is officially open for business, and can be found at the Main Street Town Square, in front of CIBC in Whitehorse this summer.
