Juno Award-winning Indigenous composer and operatic tenor, Jeremy Dutcher, who has incorporated recordings of his ancestors from over a century ago, will perform on Friday, June 25, 2020 at the Adaka Cultural Festival.
The Adaka Cultural Festival runs from June 25th to July 2nd in Whitehorse this year. The word Adaka means "Coming into the Light" in Southern Tutchone and the Festival brings Yukon First Nations artists together with Indigenous artists from across Canada and around the world to share and celebrate their creativity and culture with local, national and international audiences.
The Yukon Arts Centre and the Adaka Cultural Festival and are co-presenting the June 25 performance of Juno Award-winning Indigenous composer and operatic tenor, Jeremy Dutcher, who has incorporated recordings of his ancestors from over a century ago into his arrangements. Jeremy studied music studies in Halifax before working in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History, painstakingly transcribing Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders.
Each year, the Adaka Cultural Festival carries a theme, or a specific area of focus. Adaka celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and the theme of the festival is a 'A Celebration of Nations,' which will showcase artists from all key cultural groups from across Canada making it national in scope.
Over 200 visual and performing artists will gather in downtown Whitehorse to participate in a vibrant program of events including traditional & contemporary music, dance & drumming, art exhibitions, artist demonstrations, a fashion show, cultural presentations, workshops, drumming circles, storytelling and more!
