Faster Internet Coming to the Arctic

$50 million for improved Internet in Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut - The federal government says it will spend nearly $50 million to improve internet access in Nunavut.

The Arctic territory has long had some of the poorest and most expensive service in Canada.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains made the announcement in Iqaluit today.

The money is to be matched by another $73 million from Northwestel, a regional service provider.

It will benefit communities across a wide swath of the Eastern Artic.

Everyone from local users to Senate committee members have long identified poor internet as a major barrier to northern development.
