It's a way for communities to have their voice heard when it comes to crime.

The Council of Yukon First Nations has announced the creation of a Yukon First Nations Community Impact Statement pilot project through funding provided by the Yukon government’s Crime Prevention and Victim Services Trust fund.

According to the Department of Justice, a Community Impact Statement is a written statement that describes the harm or loss that an offence has caused to a community. They allow the community to explain to the court and the offender how the crime has affected them.

CYFN says the project enables them to develop a Yukon First Nations Community Impact Statement program by hiring of a dedicated staff member to gather statements from communities affected by crimes.

Grand Chief Peter Johnston says often times the justice system is focused on the offender.

“The development and coordination of a formalized process for Yukon First Nations in preparing and submitting Community Impact Statements is addressing an existing gap.” Says Johnston.

The pilot project is taking place from December 2020 through December 2021 and has submitted three Community Impact Statements so far.
