Carcross/Tagish First Nations is helping members attend Lower Post residential school demolition

The former Lower Post residential school will be torn down later this month.

Transportation will be provided but they will have to find their own accommodations.

The former residential school in Lower Post is set to be demolished at the end of the month.

Carcross/Tagish First Nation is supporting members who would like to attend by providing transportation.

Stacey Robinson-Brown is the Health and Wellness Director for the First Nation. They say it’s about bringing people together.

“Even people that didn’t necessarily go to that residential school, they went to Choutla or they went to another residential school, people are still very much affected by residential schools and the oppression and all of the negative impacts on themselves and families and their communities. It’s so important to be there for this monumental event.” Says Robinson-Brown.

Robinson-Brown says they would like to be able to provide accommodations but there are no available rooms in the area. People wanting to attend will have to find their own place to stay.

The Daylu Dena Council, the government of Canada, and the government of British Columbia have partnered together to build a new community and cultural centre on the site of the former residential school. In the wake of a mass children’s grave discovered in Kamloops, the Lower Post site will be investigated before construction begins.

Demolition is set for June 21.
