The money will go towards a new groomer to enable the society to enhance its programming.
The Friends of Mount Sima Society was awarded $520,240 by the Yukon Lottery Commission during the spring intake of its Project Fund. It marks the Yukon Lottery Commissions first Large Project under its Projects Fund. The money will go towards a new groomer to enable the society to enhance its programming.
The funding comes from the sale of lottery tickets. The commission invests approx. $2 million into community-based initiatives annually, with a focus on arts, sports, and recreation.
Yukon Lottery Commission CEO, Frank Curlew, says "Mt. Sima is an important sport and recreation asset to the Yukon. The Yukon Lottery Commission is pleased to make the investment in this new groomer that will help the Friends of Mount Sima sustain and enhance its winter programming for Yukoners to enjoy"
The groomer will provide better snow and ski conditions for skiers to use.
Friends of Mt. Sima President, Scott Casselman says "We sincerely appreciate the support of Lotteries Yukon and look forward to using the new groomer next season to benefit Yukoners, Snowboard Yukon, Yukon Freestyle Ski Association, and Yukon Alpine Ski Association"
In 2018, the Yukon Lottery Commission Projects Fund was redesigned so it could fund more arts, sport, and recreation projects, as well as fund larger projects like the Mt. Sima groomer.
The Yukon Lottery Commission approved 10 other projects including the Dawson City Arts Society, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society Yukon, Jazz Yukon, and the Yukon Comic Culture Society.
The next Project Fund intake is October 15th, 2019, with $647,578 available to fund large projects, and $345,825 available for small to medium projects.
