The discussions started earlier this year and formal negotiations have now commenced.

The Champagne and Aishihik First Nations' Dän nätthe äda Kaaxnox, also known as First Nations Chief Steve Smith, and the Mayor of Haines Junction Michael Riseborough have signed an Agreement in Principle (AIP) between the two governments.

The principle includes provisions ranging from amendments to municipal boundaries, provisions to municipal services across the municipality, joint infrastructure and economic development projects, municipal voting, and more.

According to First Nations Chief Steve Smith, the document will mutually benefit both parties, and will help commit towards a working relationship between the community and the people of Dadkwakada.

On February 26, 2018, the two governments in conjunction with the Yukon Government announced the formalized discussions and now formal negotiations have commenced.

Mayor Riseborough also commented on the AIP, saying it lays a foundation to move forward as one community through development of stronger relationships.
